4. Learning always exhibits a dialectical relationship of theory and practice.

A dialectical relationship is one in which two opposites face each other in struggle—proletariat and bourgeoisie, dominating teacher and dynamic learner—and, in their clash, achieve a transcendent progression. The theory-practice dialectic is usually framed as one in which academic theory, disconnected from everyday experience, is positioned in opposition to a constantly changing practice that follows no theoretical rules. Guevara (1985) describes this as an interaction between “leaders, who with their acts teach the people and the people themselves who rise in rebellion and teach the leaders” (p. 51). In terms of the theory-practice dialectic, radical teaching transcends these categories in forming (depending on your preference) theoretical practice or practical theory.
